The Federal Railroad Administration?s (FRA) Next Generation High-Speed Rail Program is a key element in the U.S. Department of Transportation?s overall effort to promote high-speed rail passenger transportation in the United States, particularly in selected congested inter-urban corridors. The program supports the advancement of high-speed rail, particularly on existing infrastructure, by improving, adapting, and demonstration potentially more cost-effective technologies which could have wide application in U.S. corridors. Technologies most likely to help facilitate the deployment of high-speed rail service are those which will (1) bring about cost reductions in constructing and maintaining equipment, track, and facilities; (2) reduce operating costs by providing more efficient operations; (3) improve the reliability of equipment and infrastructure components by reducing failures and/or reducing the false failure detections; (4) improve safety by reducing human and technology failures; (5) enhance revenue-generating capability by attracting greater ridership through reducing trip times, upgrading customer service quality, increasing reliability, or improving on-time performance and/or (6) enhance the social benefits and/or environmental aspects of high-speed rail. This is an unrestricted solicitation for which interested parties may submit proposals in accordance with the BAA2005-1 package which may be downloaded or printed from the following Internet website: http://www.fra.dot.gov.
